1. TurboTax
TurboTax is the most widely used brand of tax software in America.
The Deluxe version is the most commonly used TurboTax product. It’s the one my husband and I have used for fifteen years.
2. FreeTaxUSA
Another discount option is FreeTax USA. This website offers a free federal tax return and a $14.99 state return.
It’s free for everyone, whether you’re using the Basic, Advanced, Premium, or Self-Employed version.
Upgrade to the Deluxe Edition for $6.99 for priority support with live chat, unlimited amended returns, and audit assist.
3. TaxSlayer
TaxSlayer has a free federal and state return option for those who only need the 1040 form.
Otherwise, their other versions are very reasonably priced, with the Classic version priced at just $29.95 (state additional). Pay a little extra for Ask a Tax Pro and live chat options.

4. H&R Block
H&R Block also offers a Free Edition that is best for first-time filers and those who qualify to use the simplest tax return forms. If you qualify, you’ll be able to file both your federal and state returns for free.

5. TaxACT
TaxAct offers a free option for simple tax returns, but you’ll pay $34.95 to file your state return.
Their deluxe version is just $24.95 for federal returns, which is a big savings over a similar version of TurboTax and/or H&R Block.
TaxACT offers free live advice from CPAs and tax experts for all filers who use their program.
6. IRS Free File
Of course, you can always file on the IRS website itself. If your income is below $72,000, you’ll get free tax prep software; if it’s above $72,000, you’ll get free file fillable forms.
7. Military OneSource

8. MyFreeTaxes
MyFreeTaxes.com offers free state and federal filing (online or in-person) for individuals and families with a combined household income of $57,000 or less in 2021.

9. LibertyTax (eSmart Tax)
LibertyTax is best known for their in-person tax preparation, but you can also file online by yourself or with a little help from their tax pros with eSmart Tax.

10. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide
If you can’t pay for online tax software or don’t want to file online, be sure to check out AARP Foundation Tax-Aide – the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service.
They specifically help low- to moderate-income taxpayers, especially those 50 and older.
11. VITA and TCE
The Volunteer Income Tax Association (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free tax help. VITA helps people who generally make $57,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited English-speaking taxpayers.
